James Gosling’s Letter to the Java Community

Dear Java Community,

As you can see, we’re making progress with our plans to open source
Sun’s implementations of the Java platform. I’m happy to see Java
technology embarking on a new journey with this official open-source
licensing announcement.

Java technology has been a cornerstone of software development for
more than a decade now — the community is ready for the next chapter,
and the timing is right. As we stated at the JavaOne conference last
May, the most crucial part of this decision was that we realized
developers want to preserve compatibility, interoperability, and
reliability. We intend to take steps to help make sure Java technology
remains compatible, interoperable, and reliable. And we know the Java
community feels the same way.

We will continue to do an immense amount of testing with the Java
platform. Everything we do will get checked, rechecked, and we will
debug rigorously. We expect that people who care about reliability and
compatibility with the Java specification will continue to use and
enhance Java technology.

One reason Java technology remains so popular is that it’s
remarkably successful at spanning a lot of different domains. You can
write software for application servers, cell phones, scientific
programming, desktop applications, games, embedded software — the list
is endless. We’re intend to maintain the support of this broad span of
domains.

Sun continues to embrace open source, and I invite you to join us.
There are all kinds of contributions you can make. If there’s a bug
that you really care about, you can go work out a fix. (That’s one area
where developers have made tens of thousands of contributions over the
years.) I also invite you to help us add new features. If there’s new
functionality that you really want in Java technology, the process is
there to help you to add that to the platform as well.

Sincerely,
James Gosling

Lego Programming

Very nice post on Joel on software
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2006/12/05.html

Frequently, the mainstream media, reporting on computer programming tools, gets the story horribly wrong.

What happens is that some kind of vendor of programming technologies has come up with some product they are claiming makes programming easier. The journalists don’t really understand. What they hear is “programming is going to be easier.” Usually there’s some kind of Lego allusion.

Om Malik (November, 2006): “… these startups are building development environments that let the user cobble together software packages as easily as snapping together Lego bricks.”

He admits: “… the transition to this type of platform is going to be slow; I believe it could take about three years to realize its potential.”

Three years?

BusinessWeek ran a cover-story about object oriented programming way back in September, 1991, accompanied by a picture of a baby in diapers programming a computer. They also used the Lego metaphor: “Indeed, at the software startup they now head, Objective Technologies Inc., programming seems downright juvenile: Instead of mucking around in tangles of C code—writing arcane statements such as printf (“%s/n”, curr str)—they mainly connect boxes on the screens of their NeXT Computer Inc. workstations and fill in blanks. In minutes, they have industrial-strength programs that run right the first time and that can be modified without brain surgery. Says Bergerson, 27: ‘I showed my mother, and she said, “You’re still playing with Lego blocks, like when you were a kid!”’”

“Eventually, a whole new way of selling software may emerge. In a market of interchangeable, plug-and-play objects, you might shop for pieces separately and compile your own custom software.”

None of them believed Frederick P. Brooks, in 1987: “Not only are there no silver bullets now in view, the very nature of software makes it unlikely that there will be any—no inventions that will do for software productivity, reliability, and simplicity what electronics, transistors, and large-scale integration did for computer hardware…. I believe the hard part of building software to be the specification, design, and testing of this conceptual construct, not the labor of representing it and testing the fidelity of the representation…. If this is true, building software will always be hard. There is inherently no silver bullet.”

Water Clogged People in Bangladesh – Let’s help them out!

Hello all,
(Thanks go to hasin bhai)

This mail is involves approximately one hundred thousand people,
living in a remote place of Jessore named Vobodoho Upazilla. Many of
you may already know about this issue. For those who do not know about
this, about one hundred thousand people in three villages of Vobodoho
Upazilla in Jessore have been water clogged for more than a year. All
their lands are under water. Therefore, they cannot cultivate anything.
Their houses and roads areunder water, too. As a result, they cannot
lead normal life. Water clogging is not a new issue in Bangladesh. This
situation it did not arise from flood. It’s a man made disaster. It has
occured due to the formation of sluice gate there. Therefore, it does
not have any natural solution.

This water is not going anywhere unless the authority does something
about the sluice gates. It was decided on November 2005 that the
situation would be dealt on an emergency basis. But, needless to day,
no help reached to the villagers. If anyone wants to know more
information about this issue, here is the web site link:

http://bhobodoho.blogspot.com/

This blog is being maintained by the Drishtipat Virginia(USA). Our objective is twofold

1. To raise awareness
2. To donate those people

Those people are badly in need of food, medicine and other stuffs.
But, raising awareness is more important than donation. We can give
donation which will temporarily solve the problem. But, people have to
be aware of this. Otherwise, the NUMB authority of Bangladesh is never
going to pay any heed to the demand of those people.

Students of BRAC University have currently done a video on youthtube
about this issue. It gives a vivid picture of the sufferings of those
people.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =w6jbUi4VTDw

Muhammad Jafar Iqbal recently wrote an article in Prothom Alo ocussing those people.

http://www.shuchinta.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09 /mziSep2706.pdf

Now, in order to raise awareness we are thinking of doing a manob
bondhonat Shahid Minar. A tentative date for the event is 20 Dec. A few
members from Dristipat Virginia will be visting Bd during that time.

We are trying to get some Big names along with us to have greater
attention. A press release will be issued to involve media. We need
people. The more people we have the stronger the event.

Our earnest request to everyone .please spread this news…..only 17 more days to the event…..

Hope to see you all there………

LETS DO IT
